Weaving Destination

A new group of vulnerable women has joined the WWP and started a social enterprise called "Weaving Destination". Weaving Destination consists of vulnerable indigenous women in the Bodoland Territorial Council in the State of Assam, India, which is a post-conflict area prone to flooding. They include women living with HIV, survivors of trafficking and female migrant returnees who are highly vulnerable to re-/trafficking, social exclusion and impoverishment.

Weaving Destination produces hand-woven silk and cotton products using traditional patterns. They include sill scarfs, handy crafts, and cotton fabrics for industrial use. Additionally, Weaving Destination, using profits from the sale of their products, plans to operate a vocational training centre for vulnerable indigenous young girls who are highly prone to trafficking.

Weaving Destination is supported by UNDP India.

The Modern Dress Sewing Factory (MDSF) is a small garment factory based in Phnom Penh that produces quality garments and a variety of tote bags for local, national and international markets. The business began in January 2007 as the business unit of the Cambodian Community of Women living with HIV(CCW), and MDSF currently employs 15 women living with HIV.

MDSF's excellent management team and skilled workers guarantee timely delivery of quality products. MDSF has institutionalized a strong quality control system, and continues to improve workmanship and implement more efficient production processes through ongoing employee capacity and skills development programmes, such as those conducted by the Cambodia Garment Training Centre.

MDSF integrates market driven development into business processes, this involves focused market research as well as product testing. In this regard, they are supported by 'Women Empowered through Inter National Cooperation' (WEINC), a group of Japanese women volunteers who assist MDSF in designing new products, conducting market feasibility assessments, marketing, and product testing.

In the span of one year, the factory has already established business partnerships with national markets in Cambodia and customers abroad. Some of the major buyers include government schools (student uniforms) as well as international agencies; the International Labour Organisation (ILO), UNAIDS, and UNESCO have purchased MDSF bags for their conferences.

MDSF is currently exploring international markets for our products.
